Carrie Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, spoke with Daily News about the actress’ presence in the concluding chapter of the sequel trilogy. In the article, Mr. Fisher says filmmakers will use unused footage of Carrie from The Last Jedi. The article alludes that there will be no use of CGI to bring General Leia back to the big screen.
[Billie Lourd and I] were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t.
Both Carrie’s brother and daughter gave permission for Disney to use the unused footage. There are no details on how this will be achieved. One can only assume there will be some form on effects and compositing to put real footage of Carrie into brand new scenes for Ep. IX. However, it seems there will be no full on “Rogue One” cgi-style recreation.
I find this to be a tricky way to bring Leia into the film. Depending on exactly what this “unused” footage entails, Leia’s presence could be very brief. I can’t imagine she would have any extensive scenes with dialogue not used for The Last Jedi. I have absolute faith in Disney at this point, so I know they and Lucasfilm will treat this with the utmost care. Leia is an integral part of the story, as she is one of the main antagonist’s mother. Hopefully we get the long-awaited reunion scene with Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and Leia in The Last Jedi. I highly doubt Lucasfilm would cut a scene like that to be used for the final film. Bog Iger said in a past interview that her role wasn’t reduced at all in Ep. VIII. So this tells me no integral scenes like that would have been withheld for the third film.
We have about 250 days till we find out what happens in The Last Jedi. Even sooner, Celebration is in 4 days! Who knows what we’ll find out during the Ep. VIII panel this friday?
I have no doubt The Last Jedi and Ep. IX will be spectacular. Carrie Fisher’s presence will live on through these final two films and beyond.
She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.
Leia will live on to the end of the sequel trilogy. But what about beyond Ep. IX? Could she live on in books, comics, an animated TV series? It’s highly possible, and I’m excited for the future. Carrie Fisher created something beautiful and eternal with Princess Leia.
There are still dozens of stories to tell. The legacy of the Alderaanian Princess will continue.
